Ephesians 6:14 – Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the
breastplate of righteousness in place
When a soldier is called to battle, a requirement is to wear a breastplate. This type of armor protects vital organs, namely, the heart. It was fitted with loops or buckles that attached it to a belt.
We are instructed to “put on” this armor, which means that we do not wear it all the time. Putting on the armor of God requires intentionality. It requires a decision on our part to actually put it on.
To put on the breastplate of righteousness means we receive the righteousness purchased for us by Jesus on the cross.
2 Corinthians 5:21 – For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.
This piece of armor, for us as followers of Christ, is specifically designed by God to protect our heart, mind and soul from the warfare of our enemy. To try to battle Satan on our own, we will be
outmatched.
So how specifically can we put on the breastplate of righteousness?
1. We seek God and His righteousness as a first priority in our lives:
a. Matthew 6:33 – But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these
things will be added to you.
2. We desire His ways to become our ways
a. Psalm 37:4 – Delight yourself in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your
heart.
3. We get our mind right daily
a. Romans 12:2 – Do not be conformed of this world, but be transformed by the renewal
of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good
and acceptable and perfect.
Like a breastplate used in battle, this breastplate protects our vital organs spiritually. Whenever we enter the battlefield, Satan will attempt to destroy our most vulnerable areas. This is why God armors us with the breastplate of righteousness to prevent our enemy to deliver a fatal blow.
Remember men, when you are in a battle (temptation) we have to focus on what is greater. We need to move in the direction of victory. Turn to God when the battle is getting intense. Don’t wave the white flag and give in, but remember the truth found in James (4:7) – If we resist the devil, he will flee from us.
